Student Convention 2008 - Competition Rules for Tier-2

The first four of the following competitions are being conducted in a three tier format. Tier-1 competitions have been completed most of the colleges. The results are given tier-1 results page.

Winners of tier-1 competitions and wild card entry teams from other section colleges now move into tier-2 (Division level) competitions. Description and rules for the tier-2 competitions are given below.

The prizes and certificates will be supplied by SAE INDIA southern section. In all the competitions, judges' decisions are final.

The Event - 05 Jan 2007

This event is to test the knowledge of students in automotive sciences and trends.
The colleges should select a subject and intimate the students in advance and give one week time for students to prepare for the event.

Teams

Tier-1 winners and wild card teams from other section colleges
Three members per team

Competition format

Five rounds

General - pass allowed
Audio visual - pass allowed
Specialization round - no pass
negative marks for wrong answers
Rapid fire - no pass
Jackpot - no pass

Time per team for answers

For rounds other than rapid fire
20 seconds on direct
10 seconds on pass
For rapid fire round
100 seconds for 10 questions

Judging Criteria

Positive and negative marks to be decided by the judges in advance

Prizes

Three prizes: first, second and third
In case of tie, it should be broken by additional questions.

Technical Paper Presentation

The event

This event is also to test the knowledge of students in automotive sciences and trends. In addition, presentation skills of the students will be brought out. The colleges should select a subject and intimate the students in advance and give two weeks time for students to prepare for the event.

Two members per team

Competition format

Participants are required to submit the paper in soft copy and hard copy before 03-01-2008.
Tier-1 winning papers can be refined and improved before submitting to Tier-2.
Time duration
Presentation - 10 minutes
Question and answer - 5 minutes

Judging Criteria

Content - 40%
Presentation skills - 20%
Documentation - 20%
Clarity and confidence in answering questions - 20%

Modeling and Animation

The event

This event is also to test the knowledge of students in automotive sub-systems and their functioning in addition to the modeling skills.

Teams

Minimum of seven teams and two members per team

Competition format

Models should be done in ProE
Model preparation is done off line.
Demonstration during the competition
Time duration for demonstration - 10 minutes

Judging Criteria

Completeness - 40%
Functional Clarity - 40%
Presentation - 20%

Aero Design and Modeling

The event

This event is also to test the knowledge of students in building a simple model and having a good grasp of flight dynamics of a glider.

Teams

Tier-1 winners and wild card teams from other section colleges
Three members per team

Competition format

Three kits will be distributed to each team in advance. Teams to build the model off line Teams to perform design calculations During the contest Present the designs and calculations Launch the glider using a catapult according to the design supplied

Three gliders should be prepared. One glider should be designed to go in a straight path. One glider should be designed to have left banking. One glider should be designed to right banking.

The glider designed to go straight should go through a target hoop. The gliders designed to have banking should land in a target circle.
Three attempts will be allowed and the best result will be taken for judging.

Judging Criteria

Straight Glider:
Pass through target hoop - 10%
Distance and time - 10%
Banking Glider:
Landing in target circle - 10%
Distance and time - 10%
Design Calculation - 20%
Finish and aesthetic appearance - 20%
